What is a fair sample size for testing?

50-75 per test

In what order should I test - it varies, but in general the flow below makes sense:

  • When starting campaigns before testing subject, I just defer to “(Name), quick question”

Test 1:Industry/Sub niche & subject

Industry/Sub niche 1: 50 emails | 2 generic subjects, 25 each

Industry/Sub niche 2: 50 emails | 2 generic subjects, 25 each

Industry/Sub niche 3: 50 emails | 2 generic subjects, 25 each

Industry/Sub niche 4: 50 emails | 2 generic subjects, 25 each

Choose winning industry/sub niche, if no clear winner, test between the best two, or start over

Test 2: Copy length

  • Use only winning subject line for this

Short copy: 50 emails

Long copy: 50 emails

Choose winning copy, if no clear winner keep doing 50/50 until there is one

Test 3: Subject

Subject 1: 25 emails

Subject 2: 25 emails

Subject 3: 25 emails

Subject 4: 25 emails

Test 4: Lead source *Note, this test should go on outside of your existing campaign, as lead sources will have their own subject lines quite often

Lead source 1: 25 emails

Lead source 2: 25 emails

Lead source 3: 25 emails

Test 5: CTA

  • Note, this test can be with your original campaign and your lead source campaign

Test 6: Customization

  • Note, for e-commerce and some other industries I would always customize*

Generic customization: 25 emails

Niche customization: 25 emails

Full customization: 25 emails

Choose winner, if no clear winner test once more, if still no clear winner do whatever is easiest
